Relish (Mumbai) | Restaurant Review

Place: Relish – International Veg Cuisine
Location: Prem Court, Tata Road, Churchgate, Mumbai
Cuisine: Continental
Meal: Lunch (with a friend)

I’ve been meaning to write this review for over 6 months now. Relish was my favourite restaurant while I lived in Mumbai. Located in between Churchgate station and Marine Drive, Relish is a nice fancy restaurant. It’s brightly lit and is full on most occasions (which can make it quite loud). It’s got a huge menu, all vegetarian. From Italian to Mexican, Indian to Lebanese, they’ve got it all. And the best part is that they are all reasonably priced.

I was here with a friend back in December 2011 for lunch. Though I’ve had it before, I wanted to have the Veg Kaukswe (Indonesian curry served on a bed of buttered noodles) again, and also wanted to try their Mushroom Melange fondue (Delicately flavoured melted cheese with sautéed mushroom, dipping bread and assorted seasoning). Our appetite was quite limited that afternoon, but we still decided to go for both.

The Kaukswe is the best noodles I’ve had so far in my life. The curry was yummy, has this sweet and sour taste and tastes awesome with the buttered noodles. Season it with the crushed peanut served along, squeeze some lime juice, and it tastes splendid!!

I was having a fondue for the first time in my life and had nothing to compare it with, but I thought this one was excellent. It was just like mentioned, awesome cheese sauce, perfectly sautéed mushroom and crunchy dipping bread. Adding the spices served and some chilli flakes to the cheese sauce made it taste even better. Yum is not the word.

I’ve had their pizza (Spicy Indiana) before and it is perfect. Their German Potatoes, Baked Nachos, Lasagna are all equally good.

Overall, an awesome meal. The quantity of food served was exceptional and we were struggling to finish what we ordered. The service is very good, and their prices include all the taxes (except 5% service charge). This is one restaurant I would suggest to anyone living in or visiting Mumbai. I wish they opened up in Hyderabad.

Jalpaan | Restaurant Review

Place: Jalpaan
Location: 4th Floor, Oasis Center, Somajiguda
Cuisine: Buffet
Meal: Lunch (with bro)

One of my cousins had recently requested me to review this place. For her sake, and wanting to try out a new place, here I was with my brother for lunch on a Sunday. Walking in, the place had plush decor, was dimly lit and had a nice feel to it. We were asked to choose between the buffet or a-la-carte, and we decided to go for the buffet.

We were seated at a table for four, and the soup and starters were served at the table. For soup, they had Tomato Shorba and Sweet Corn Soup. I decided to have the latter while my brother opted for the Shorba.

The Sweet Corn was thick, but was very sweet and even adding tons of pepper didn’t help. The Shorba on the other hand was also sweet, but it also had the right amount of spice. I liked it better than the Sweet Corn.

For Starters, they served Aloo Katliyan, Grilled Cottage Cheese, Sheekh Kabab and something called Crispy Konjee Veg.

The Aloo Katliyan were par-boiled potatoes, sliced and spiced. They were alright, but pretty much bland. The Paneer was tender and very good. It was very well grilled and tasted yum. The Sheekh Kababs were very dry, while the Crispy Konjee turned out to be crispy vegetables which were pretty decent.

On the Indian front, they had Amritsari Masala Paneer, Methi Makai Malai, Veg Kalapuri (I suppose it’s Kohlapuri) and Dal Jalpaan.

The Paneer gravy was very good, but it had huge chunks of raw paneer which had no flavor. The Methi Makai Malai was the best of the lot. It was creamy, and I could tell that the methi used was fresh. Yum. The Kohlapuri was equally good. It had that a nice tangy flavor to it. The Butter Naan served on table was very soft and made the curries taste even better.

On the Italian front, they had Tossed Spaghetti and Penne Arrabiata. The Spaghetti was good and had a nice basil flavor to it, but was a little under-cooked. The Penne on the other hand was horrible. The arrabiata sauce was very thin, and the penne was overcooked.

They had Veg Soft Noodles and Manchuria on the Chinese front. The Noodles were very bland and had absolutely no flavor. The Manchuria was something similar to what I cook at home, burnt. The sauce was decent though. For rice, they had  Methi Chaman Biryani which was pretty alright. I thought it would have tasted better without the sweet corn.

They didn’t have a live counter, but had crispy noodles, Karara Palak Chat and make-yourself Pani Puri on the buffet. The Pakora Chat was decent, Pani Puri horrendous.

For desert, they had Moong Dal Halwa, Kheer, Strawberry Ice-cream and Chocolate sauce. The Halwa and the Kheer were one of the best deserts I’ve had at a buffet. The Halwa was full of ghee, not too sweet, just perfect, while the Kheer was creamy and awesome.

Overall, a decent meal. But apart from the Indian food, which was excellent, the rest was just average. Compared to Jiva Imperia down the road, the spread was quite small, and is also more expensive. The service is decent and the ambiance good. It’s something you can give a shot once, but I still prefer Jivas.

Sahib Sindh Sultan | Restaurant Review

Place: Sahib Sindh Sultan
Location: 5th Floor, City Center, Road No.1, Banjara Hills
Cuisine: Indian
Meal: Dinner (with family)

For dinner on my brother’s birthday, it was a choice between Siaa in Jubilee Hills and Sahib Sindh Sultan. We decided on the latter, called and made a reservation. We dropped in on time and were cordially guided to our table. The place is designed like a railway station with a train compartment on it. The compartment is very bright with tables for four, while the station  is dimly lit with a rustic touch to it. We were seated inside the compartment, whose interiors very well done. It almost felt like we were inside a train, but for the movement.

We started off with some mocktails. I had a Holiday Isle (Peach juice with Vanilla Ice-cream), mom had a Sindh Tandai (milk and crushed almonds, flavored with saffron and cardamom), and my bro had a Sahib Ka Panna (ripe pineapple roasted on charcoal pulped and combined with cumin). Dad had a cocktail.

My mocktail was creamy and alright, but it wasn’t cold. The Badam milk was excellent and the Panna was decent, but nothing great.

While we enjoyed our drinks, bread-sticks were served with three types of chutneys/sauces.

For starters, we ordered Gul Gulshan Aur Gulfam Ke Paneer (Mildy spiced paneer decked with green peas, mushroom and dry fruits, char grilled). For the second starter, the waiter suggested we try the Makai Motia Seekh (Soft vegetable seekh kabab with paneer and sweet corn niblets). We were informed that it would take a while for the food to be served while placing the order.

After about 15 minutes, the kababs were served. They looked delicious and tasted delicious. Served with mint chutney, they were as good as the kababs we recently had at Rubaiyat.

The other starter was served soon. The paneer was very soft and fresh, and tasted yum along  with the stuffing in between. I couldn’t taste any dry fruits, but it didn’t matter.

We took our time to decide on the main course and finally ordered Palak Malai Kofta (Soft malai koftas stewed in a gravy of cooked spinach and nutmeg) and Pista Kaju Aur Badam (Pista, kaju and badam simmered in a gravy of onions and tomatoes with spices) along with portions of Malai Reshmi Paratha, Pudina Paratha, Methi Paratha and Stuffed Kulcha. For rice, we ordered Aloo Aur Wadi Ki Tehri (Amritsari wadi and potatoes combined with basmati rice).

The Pista Kaju Aur Badam, their specialty dish for vegetarians, was excellent. Though the tomato onion gravy was spicy, the nuts gave it a slight sweet taste, and on the whole, it was delightful.

The Kofta too was delicious. The palak gravy was creamy and sapid, and the kofta balls were a little hard, but still good.

The rotis here are one of the best I’ve had in town. The Malai Reshmi Paratha was as soft as butter and melted in my mouth. The Masala Kulcha, though not heavily stuffed, was very soft. The other two parathas were pretty good as well.

Like other places I’ve been to recently, the biryani was a little disappointing. The waiter did mention that the wadi, or the pakoras would be smoked, but we thought they were smoked to the extreme. It was good, but after having some delicious stuff, this didn’t match our expectations.

Overall, a sumptuous, yummy meal. We were so stuffed towards the end that we didn’t have any place left even for the paan. The quantity of food served was pretty decent, but being a fancy restaurant, the prices were pretty fat. I thought the drinks were not worth the money, but the rest of the food, probably barring the biryani was excellent. Though the ambiance, the royal service, and the yummy food partly justify the prices, it’s not a restaurant for fortnightly visits, but one for special occasions.

Sandarshini | Restaurant Review

Place: Sandarshini
Location: Masab Tank, towards Banjara Hills Rd. No. 1
Cuisine: Indian
Meal: Dinner (with family)

Dropped in at Sandarshini last week for dinner. I’ve already written about this place back in July (review), and love their North-Indian Thali. As already mentioned, it’s not a hi-fi place, but one with decent ambiance.

I had a Thali for myself, while my brother ordered a South-Indian mini meals. Mom had a plate of chapathi and dad had a Masala Dosa.

The North Indian Thali was as good as the last time. They served the same stuff as the last time – Tomato soup, Paneer Butter Masala, Channa Masala and Mixed Vegetable, Pulao, Rice, Dal, Rasam, Sambar, Curd, Raitha, Gulab Jamoon and Ice-cream. All the subjis were decent, while the dal and rasam were excellent.

The South-Indian meals had the same stuff, minus the subjis, and came along with cabbage curry. It was pretty decent as well.

The Chapathi was nice and soft, and was served with a spicy kurma.

I did mention about their Masala Dosa the last time around. It was served with tons of butter on it, and was crispy and yummy. The sambar served along was very good.

Overall, a good meal. The service was a little off this time around, but otherwise, we had a good time. Give it a shot sometime.

Sitara Grand | Restaurant Review

Place: Sitara Grand
Location: KPHB Phase 1, Kukatpally
Cuisine: Indian
Meal: Dinner (with family and friends)

Went to visit family friends in Kukatpally last week with amma and my bro. We decided to head out for dinner, and dropped in at Sitara Grand. For a weekday, the place was packed at 9:30 in the night. It had decent ambiance, but the crowd was overwhelming. It took about 20 minutes for us to find a table (for 5 adults and 2 kids).

The table was still being cleaned when we were directed to it. There were loads of used tissue papers under the table, which we had to ask to be cleaned. Thanks to the capacity crowd, the waiters were running around the place, and it took about 10 minutes before water and menus arrived.

The kids ordered Chilly Chicken and American Chopsuey for themselves. The rest ordered a Paneer Butter Masala and Aloo Gobi with Tandoori Roti. We also ordered a Jeera rice.

The chicken arrived first, but instead of Chilly Chicken, Drumsticks were served. The kids dug into them without realizing this. Later, The Chilly Chicken was served. The Subjis and the Roti were served in reasonable time as well.

The Paneer Butter Masala was very good. For a change, the paneer was fresh and soft. The gravy was creamy and yum.

The Aloo Gobi proved the fact that I need to be trying something other than the regular PBM and Kofta more often. It was very well cooked, spicy and tasty. I loved it better than the PBM.

I was kinda apprehensive about the Jeera Rice, but it turned out to be very good. It had cashew-nuts and in all, was very good.

Overall, a decent meal. Though the service was quite a mess initially, it got better and better as the place emptied. The quantity of food served also was very good. It looked to be the only decent restaurant in KPHB, and it didn’t disappoint. Give it a shot when you’re in this part of the town.

De Thali | Restaurant Review

Place: De Thali
Location: White House, Next to Life Style, Begumpet
Cuisine: Rajasthani, Gujarati
Meal: Dinner (with bro and cousins)

After visiting De Thali in February, here I was again for dinner on a weekend. As expected, the place was full, and we had to wait for almost 40 minutes to get a table for 5. There was no amiable welcome this time, and we were just directed to our table.

Now here starts the trouble.  Once seated, there was no one to attend to us. I kept asking the waiters to serve food and all they were doing was relegating the message to someone else. More than the wait, it was the waiters attitude which got us really pissed. We were really hungry, it was past 10 and this was really annoying. Even the last time around, there were issues with the service, but this kind of lag is unreasonable. Finally, after more than 15 minutes, the empty thalis were placed on the table.

And then, this was listed menu for the day.

We were really excited about the Aam Panna being served. It was being advertised on the Ohri’s facebook page, and all of us were really looking forward to it. Even the Gobi Thepla’s sounded tempting.

But when it came to the meal, they were out of most of the stuff. Both the sweets were exhausted. We were instead served Kurbani Ka Meetha (at an authentic Rajasthani restaurant) and, I believe, Sooji ka Halwa. On the roti front, only Phulkas were available, no Thepla, no Jawari roti. The special dish was replaced with Masala Bhel. But the best was when Aam Ka Panna was replaced with Jaljeera water. Beat that!!

The standard seemed to have fallen on the taste front as well. The Paneer was hard like rubber, and both the Corn tikki and Dhokla were very very dry. Thankfully, the Dabka Kadi and Bhendi were excellent. Even then, they need to pull up their socks!!

Overall, a disappointing experience. I was, in fact all of us were really looking forward to a great meal, but it wasn’t to be. The waiting got us annoyed, and then the lack of items listed on the menu was irritating. It’s been a little more than 4 months since this place opened, and already this is the state. Ohri’s group, are you listening??

Sizzling Joe | Restaurant Review

Place: Sizzling Joe
Location: Food Court, GVK One, Banjara Hills
Cuisine: Continental
Meal: Dinner

After watching Hugo with a couple of friends at Inox, we walked into the food court at GVK One for a quick meal. Having heard and read about Sizzling Joe,  I wanted to give it a try. I wasn’t expecting anything great for one of my friend had a horrible experience with them recently. I should have listened to him and stayed way from it. Alas!!

Since there were only three vegetarian sizzler to choose from, it was an easy choice. I picked the Corn Cheese Shaslik sizzler, which was supposed to be soft cottage cheese and corn balls, fried and skewered with onion and capsicum, served on rice loaded with sour garlic sauce. I asked the guy at the counter if I could get it without the capsicum, and he tells me there is no capsicum in this sizzler. Hmmm… The 175 bucks sizzler got billed for Rs. 200 including taxes. Awesome!!

We sat at one of the tables waiting for our food. One of my friend had ordered a Fusilli Pasta in Pesto sauce from these guys, which was served first.

First off, for 150 bucks, the quantity seemed very less. Next, it tasted more like Alfredo sauce than Pesto. And then, it was served cold. My friend thought it was alright, and ate it without complaining.

And then came my sizzler. Again, the quantity seemed very less. The French Fries were soggy, and they were barely any vegetables on the plate. Forget capsicum, there were no onions as well. I started off with the rice on top, covered with the mentioned sour garlic sauce which barely had any taste and was bland. The rice was under-cooked too. And then, to my horror, I see a sharp something sticking out in the rice.

The Cottage Cheese and Corn balls were placed under the rice skewered into two long, sharp toothpicks. There was no way I could get it out of the plate without getting my hands dirty. The balls tasted alright, and the rice tasted better with them, but overall, the experience was horrible. The sizzler was the worst I’ve had so far.

Overall, a horrendous meal. If it were another day, I would have complained about the sizzler to the management, but having enjoyed an awesome movie, I was in no mood to do so tonight. The guy at the counter too seemed like a loser, for he was swearing at someone else while I was placing my order. For the price, the quantity seemed minimal, and the taste was pathetic. It’s one of the worst restaurant experiences.

Stay away!!

My other friend had a South Indian Special Thali from the Gongura counter.

It looked good, and apparently even tasted good. I’m sure it was way better than a Sizzling Joe sizzler!!

Chillys | Restaurant Review

Place: Chillys
Location: Next to Paradise, S.D Road, Secunderabad
Cuisine: Indian
Meal: Dinner (with cousins)

Met my cousins after a long time, and after having loads of fun at Alligator, dropped in at Chillys to hog. It was my choice for I’ve been to this place long time ago, and loved their food. It’s a brightly lit restaurant with an ambiance perfect for family crowd. We were courteously seated at a table for six towards the back of the restaurant. The waiters were quite nice and gave us our time to settle.

We were quite hungry, so skipped the soup and ordered a Veg. Manchuria, Paneer Tikka and Shanghai Rolls for the starters. For the main course, after a lot of khich-khich, we ordered Kaju Masala, Rajasthani Kofta and Hyderabadi Paneer. We went for the Roti Tokri which came with Tandoori roti, Masala Kulcha, Butter Naan and Paratha. We also ordered a portion of Nawabi Kulcha and Kaju Bhari Kulcha. For rice, we ordered Dum Biryani and Veg. Fried Rice.

In less than 10 minutes, the starters were served one after the other. The Manchuria was crispy and crunchy, a little spicy, but still tasted good.

The Shanghai Rolls were again crispy (maybe a little too crispy). The stuffing inside was yummy and overall, delicious.

The best of the lot though was the Paneer Tikka. The paneer was as soft as malai and pretty much melted in my mouth. They were very well marinated and it was one of the best Paneer Tikka I’ve had in recent times.

After another 10 minute wait, the main course was served. The Rajasthani Kofta tasted pretty much like the regular Kofta. The kofta balls were soft and good, the gravy was yum, but maybe a little too salty.

The Hyderabadi Paneer had the awesome paneer in it. The gravy was creamy and yum, but again, little salty.

I loved Kaju Masala the best. The gravy pretty much tasted like the one used for the Hyderabadi Paneer, but overall, excellent.

All the rotis and kulchas were really soft and good. The Stuffed Kulcha was the best.

The Biryani tasted very good, but was a little too oily. The rice also was more or less broken. Nevertheless, it had a nice flavor to it. The Fried Rice on the other hand was excellent. It was perfectly cooked, and I know I say this often, but the best I’ve had in recent times. Yummy!!

To end the meal, we ordered for one Mango and one Chocolate ice cream. The waiter was sweet enough to serve them one by two, and yet, the quantity in each bowl was as good as a full ice cream. Both of them tasted yum.

Overall, we had a wonderful time. The ambiance was perfect and let us be as loud as we could. The waiters were sweet enough to join us in our conversations. One guy was actually motivating my little cousin sister to finish her meal by telling her stories. The prices were very reasonable as well. Though there was nothing exceptional about the food, the overall experience was amazing. The paneer needs a special mention.

This is a perfect restaurant for family dining. Give it a shot with your loved ones!

Rubaiyat | Restaurant Review

Place: Rubaiyat
Location: Cyber Pearl, Hitech City
Cuisine: Indian
Meal: Dinner (with my family)

For dinner on my birthday, we (me, my bro, mom and dad) decided to dine at Rubaiyat. My brother just got back from Europe, and was longing to eat some delicious Indian food, so here we were. The place was dimly lit, the ambiance was pretty neat and had a royal Indian touch to it. We sat in a corner at a table for four, but were so close to another table that it seemed as if the couple sitting there was part of our family.

The menu was quite huge and it took us a while to decide on what we were having. To start off, I had a Rubaiyat Colada (Peach Apricot, Pineapple juice and cream). It was served in the next 5 minutes. It tasted good, but was a little too sweet, probably because of the pineapple juice.

For starters we ordered Paneer Tikka Sofiyani (malai paneer marinated in cream and yellow chilli, char grilled in tandoor and flavored with fennel) and Subz Kakori Tukkri (shallow fried spinach and mushroom kabab crusted with almond flakes).

The kababs were served first and were exceptionally good. The spinach and mushroom were well mixed and tasted excellent. The almond flakes added crunch, and as the description said, the kababs melted in mouth.

The paneer on the other hand was quite a disappointment. They were well marinated, but there was no proper flavor to the dish and therefore tasted bland. It was as if we were eating raw paneer. Instead of finishing it, we wrapped it up and my brother made excellent burji out of it the next day.

The kababs got us pretty full, and we decided to go light on the main course. We wanted to order something different from what we usually have and were interested in Gucchi Palak aur Singada (Kishtwari morels of Kashmir, stir fried with roasted garlic, chestnuts and spinach). We tried asking the waiter what this exactly was but he had no clue. We decided to give it a shot anyways and ordered Masala Kulcha with it.

The morels turned out to be mushrooms, and the curry was something like Mushroom Palak with water-chestnuts. The palak gravy was very good with a strong garlic flavor to it. The mushrooms weren’t anything special, and tasted like regular ones. The chestnuts in between tasted quite weird actually.

To finish it off, we decided to have the Choley aur Aloo ki Biryani. The description said that it was biryani cooked with cashew nuts and Choley, but to our surprise, we neither found nuts nor kabuli channa choley, nor the aloo. Instead, we got biryani with black channa. The Biryani was good, but the channa spoiled the taste.

At the end of the meal, instead of a pan, pan juice was served, which I thought was very innovative. It tasted just like a regular pan, yum.

Overall, an average meal, nothing remarkable. Except for the kababs, which were out of this world, everything else was moderate. Though the ambiance was good, the waiters seemed a little rude. Also, the tables being so close together was very inconvenient. The prices were pretty reasonable for a restaurant in this part of the town.

Give it a shot when you get a chance, but don’t expect anything great. Do try the kababs!

Via Milano | Restaurant Review

Place: Via Milano
Location: Road No. 36, Jubilee Hills
Cuisine: Italian
Meal: Lunch (with a friend)

After hearing a lot, and I mean a lot about this place, I was finally here for lunch on my birthday. We walked in into this bright restaurant, well-lit from the sunshine outside. On first look, I liked the place and the ambiance. It was quite full for a weekday and we were seated at a table for four in a corner, next to the bar. We had to move to a different one soon, for I had accidentally spilled water on the table.

We were offered a menu for the Executive Lunch, which was basically a fixed menu which included a drink, starter, an entrée and a desert. For 500 bucks (vegetarian), it seemed very reasonable, so we opted for it.

The moment we placed the order, a bread basket was served along with Olive oil, Vinegar, Chopped Tomatoes and Garlic sauce. The bread was fresh, and the garlic sauce was awesome. It was definitely the best I’ve had in recent times. Finger licking good!

20042012365-1024x728

For the drinks, I picked Surf Song (Pineapple juice, Lychee juice, Coconut milk, Blue Curacao) and my friend had a Winter Breeze (Cranberry juice, Melon syrup, sweet and sour). The Surf Song was served in a Margarita glass and was very good. The other drink was served in a wine glass, half filled (as much as you see in the pic). It tasted just like regular Cranberry juice, nothing great. I was very disappointed with the quantity.

For the starters we had Fried Buffalo Mozzarella and Zucchini Rolls, with a tomato sauce, and Panzarotties filled with spinach, ricotta cheese and nuts served with a spicy tomato and pesto sauce.

The cheese and zucchini rolls were very well presented. The quantity though was minimal (It was the same for the rest of the meal, so I wouldn’t mention it again). The taste though was exceptional. The cheese was very good and was melting in my mouth. They tasted great with the yummy garlic sauce.

The Panzarotties tasted very good, crunchy, and I loved the spicy sauce served along.

For the main course, it was Spaghetti in a cream and tomato sauce, with herbs and sautéed vegetables, and Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli on fresh oregano scented light tomato sauce.

The Spaghetti’s quantity was much better than the rest. It was good and had a strong tomato flavor to it. I would have preferred it to be more creamy.

The Ravioli tasted pretty much like the Panzarotties. The sauce was creamy and yum.

20042012372-1024x396

Finally, for deserts, we picked a Tiramisu with Italian Mascarpone cheese, Lavazza Espresso  and Rum, and a White and Dark Chocolate Mousse Terrine. The Mousse was excellent. The Tiramisu was good as well, but had loads of rum in it, too strong for me.

Though I was full, unable to stop my temptation to have a pizza (since I’ve heard that these guys serve really good pizzas), ordered a Quattro Formaggi (tomato sauce and four types of Italian cheese; mozzarella, parmesan, goat cheese and gorgonzola).

After having small portions of everything, was first impressed by the size of the pizza (I am guessing it was a good 12″). The crust was good, sauce perfect, but I thought the cheese was a lil too strong. It had an after taste which was quite weird. Though I liked it, I still prefer the 100 Degrees or the Viva Italia pizza.

Overall, a sumptuous meal. I loved the concept of the executive lunch. Though the quantities could have been way better, it was good enough to make you walk out without feeling stuffed. The ambiance is great, service was pretty good as well, except that it took unusually long periods of time for the food to be served (not that we had a problem with it). I liked the way they presented their food, and the food in itself was pretty yummy. It would now be tough to choose between this place and Little Italy.

I’d suggest you give the place a try. Who knows, you might have a new favorite restaurant in town! 🙂
